What is a doula?
A doula is a professionally trained and licensed birth attendant who performs a unique and vital role during the birthing process. A doulas whole focus is on providing mental and physical support to a laboring woman. The doula advocate for the mother and her birth plan and helps the mother adapt to changes to her birth plan if necessary.
We encourage our patients to seek Doula help with labor and delivery. Research has shown that having a doula’s support during labor will decrease the need for medication, decrease the time in labor and time spent pushing. Further, their role in the labor process decreases tearing and the need for an episiotomy. Overall, the doula helps to decrease the stress and anxiety of labor for both the mother and her partner, which in turn will reduces a woman’s chance of needing a c/section or operative delivery.
